Off the mark over five furlongs at Newcastle June 2, Nick Bradley Racing and Elaine Burke's Dandalla (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) really turned it on in Friday's G3 Albany S. as she came home alone. Sent off at 13-2, the bay travelled with zest anchored in rear early by Ben Curtis as Flying Aletha (Tiznow) cut out the running. Moving between rivals with menace approaching the two pole, she was in front soon after and galloped resolutely to the line for an emphatic six-length success from the 11-4 favourite Setarhe (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}), with Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) a neck back in third.
“This is the first year I've come down here with a realistic chance of winning, so it's brilliant,” first-time Royal Ascot winner Curtis said. “We knew she had speed, as she ran away with me from two-and-a-half out at Newcastle so I was keen to get a lead and get her relaxed. She came alive at the two pole and it looked like she had just jumped in. She demolished them. The worry coming here was the ground, as she has a lovely action and so better ground won't be a problem to her. She's versatile that way.”
Karl Burke is accustomed to handling serious distaff talent and the trainer of Laurens (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) added, “She is not slow, but has plenty of stamina on her dam's side so although not many Dandy Man's get a mile she's one that has a great chance of it. If he is going to have a 1,000 Guineas winner, it could be her. You could probably say that the ground has exaggerated the winning distance and time will tell how strong the form is, but we couldn't be happier at this time. A few times at the top of the Middleham gallop where we do most of our work, jockeys have been struggling to pull her up. My daughter Lucy earmarked her since before Christmas. She actually came in one day and said 'I hate to say it, but this filly reminds me of Laurens.' She is probably more precious than Laurens, who had not even run at this time during her two-year-old career. She is also speedier than her and the question now is how far she stays.”
Bought for a bargain €22,000 by Karl and Elaine's daughter Kelly at the Tattersalls Ireland September Sale, Dandalla is out of a half-sister to the Italian listed scorer Konkan (Ire) (Aussie Rules). The G3 Prix des Reservoirs-winning fourth dam Edinburgh (GB) (Charlottown {GB}) proved a rich source for Ballymacoll Stud, producing the G1 Prix du Cadran heroine Sought Out (Ire) (Rainbow Quest) who gave them their G1 Epsom Derby hero North Light (Ire). Also connected to the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud-winning sire Gamut (Ire) (Spectrum {Ire}), her yearling filly is by Divine Prophet (Aus).
